Released in the summer of 1993, Rain peaked at a respectable #14 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Chart, and received considerable airplay in the US. Rain featured some interesting vocal work, particularly the overlapping of verses in the latter part of the song. Most fans would suspect that Madonna was wearing blue eye contacts in the video, but they are wrong. The video was shot entirely in black & white film, and was later hand colored during the editing process. The overall effect of the make up and video's styling evoked Japanese sensibilities, a cultural approach she would time and time again borrow and remodel as her own. The video won two MTV Video Music Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.
